Resolution
WHEREAS, the Common Council wishes to rename the City-owned building on 10 Mulberry Street that formerly housed the Senior Center,
and WHEREAS Theodore Denton Mills, who married Christina Stivers, (daughter of Moses Dunning Stivers, U.S. Congressman, publisher, tax collector, county clerk, bank president, etc.) set up his medical practice on this property in 1888,
and WHEREAS their daughter, Elizabeth Stivers Mills, amateur historian whose archives can be found in the Elizabeth Stivers Mills room in Thrall Library, lived most of her life in this building,
and WHEREAS their son, Samuel Wickham Mills Sr., chief of surgery at Horton Hospital was the second physician to live in this home,
and WHEREAS Dr. Mills married Dorothy VanOrden, and they had two sons, one being Samuel Wickham Mills Jr., who was also chief of surgery at Horton Hospital and the third physician to live in this home,
and WHEREAS their younger son, Louis VanOrden Mills, who also lived in this home, was the youngest Mayor of Middletown, the first Orange County Executive, and founder of the Orange County Land Trust, the current tenant of said building,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Common Council of the City of Middletown does hereby rename said building as "The Mills House."
