Recreation and Parks Department works year round to provide a wide range of safe and accessible recreational facilities and leisure time programs for participants of all ages. Whatever your interest may be, you can always find an activity or a special event to enhance your quality of life. Year round programs include: Special Events, Basketball, Soccer, Cheerleading, Community Center Programs, Fitness, Pre-School program,  Teen Programs, Tennis.

The City of Middletown has thirteen parks available that can accommodate baseball, basketball, bicycling, cooking, fishing, football, horse shows, outdoor concerts, ice skating, jogging, picnics, playground activities, soccer, swimming, tennis, walking or just relaxing with the family or friends.Reservations for park facilities can be made by calling our office at least thirty days in advance. Reservations for the picnic pavilions in Fancher-Davidge, Ben & Paula Amchir Park, & Maple Hill are accepted beginning in January to reserve for dates of May 15th through Oct 15th of each year. A small fee is required. Revocable Permits are also issued for other requested use of City park property. Our Professional Staff look forward to serving you.

Dog Park

The City of Middletown new Dog Park is located at Maple Hill Park supervised by the Recreation and Parks Department.  Please call 845-346-4180 with questions or concerns.

(Hours of operation are subject to change at the discretion of the Superintendent of Recreation & Parks as deemed necessary)

    •  Park Users and Dog Owners assume all risks related to park use
    • The off-leash dog park does not permit children ten (10) years of age and under or dogs under four (4)    months old
    • Children from 11 years of age to 17 years of age must be under adult supervision at all times
    • Area A – Small dogs (30 lbs or less)
    • Area B – All dogs
    • Maximum of three (3) dogs per adult
    • Dogs must be spayed or neutered
    • Dogs must be licensed by the City of Middletown and up-to-date with vaccinations
    • A current license tag must be visible on each dog’s collar
    • Dogs must be leashed when entering and exiting the off-leash park area
    • Dogs are permitted to be off-leash in the designated fenced area only and the gates must remain closed
    • Owners/responsible parties must carry a leash and maintain control over their dogs at all times while in the park
    • Owners/responsible parties must clean up after their dogs and dispose of dog waste in an
      appropriate container
    • Dogs are prohibited from digging. Any holes created must be filled in by owner before leaving the park
    • No dog treats, human foods or drinks are permitted in the off-leash park
    • No animals other than dogs are permitted within the off-leash park area
    • Dog are not permitted on benches
    • Aggressive and/or threatening dogs are not permitted in the off-leash park unless muzzled and leashed at all times
    • Aggressive behavior, dog bites to person or dogs and/or other such incidents must be reported to the Recreation & Parks Department office at 845-346-4180 Monday-Friday during the hours of 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM or 343-3151 on evenings and weekends.
    • All other Recreation & Parks rules and regulations, as well as, all City of Middletown ordinances apply.

3 & 4 Year Old Pre-School Program

Registrations for child to be enrolled in September of 2016 are being accepted. The prgram is for 3 and 4 year olds and emphasizes eye-hand coordination, socialization, and kindergarten readiness. 

Classes are conducted Monday through Friday at the  Michael G. Perkins Community center. We offer either  a Morning Session from 8:30am to 11:30am and an Afternoon Session from 12:00pm to 3:00pm. 

The cost us $120 per month for Middletown Residents and $140 per month for Non-Middleotwn Residents. Monthly tuition is expected to be paid on time to avoid a late fee.

Fall, Winter, & Spring Special Events

Story Time Come Alive!

Story time come alive is a 45 minute session of interactive story time. You and your child will sit together and hear a story read aloud while being engaged with dramatics, crafts, treats, and music. Story Time Come Alive is held weekly on Thursday mornings from 10:00am to 10:45am. The cost is $5.00 per family.

The City of Middletown VS. The City of Port Jervis Annual Bell Game
One of the oldest rivalries in the nation, the Middletown vs. Port Jervis game celebrates community and America’s favorite pastime: High School Football. The ambition of both teams to bring home the Erie bell is easily recognizable and glowing. This year’s Bell Game will be on Friday, September 9th at 7:00pm at Middletown High School’s Faller Field Complex. Come show your Middie Pride!

Middletown Fire Department Parade
Join us Saturday, September 10th for the Middletown Firemen’s Annual Inspection Parade at 
3:00pm presented by the City of Middletown Fire Department.

Touch-A-Truck Event

Touch-A-Truck is a free event for all families whose little ones wish to experience and explore everyday community vehicles within the City of Middletown. Children will have the chance to encounter these vehicles and be able to engage with one of the community helpers who operate the vehicle.  This event will be in conjunction with the Middletown Farmers Market on September 24th from 11:00am to 1:00pm in the Erie Way parking lot.

Scarecrow Contest
Show off your fall spirit and join us for the Second Annual Scarecrow Contest! Gather your family, business associates, departments or school teams and decorate your scarecrow to best represent your group. Please make sure your scarecrow is labeled with a clearly, visible sign. All scarecrows will be placed on display in front of City Hall and the Middletown Police Station. You must register and drop –off your scarecrow on Wednesday, September 14th at the Middletown Recreation Office so that they may be set up on Friday, September 16th. We will name a winner on Saturday, October 22nd at the Harvest Festival. Your scarecrow must be able to withstand weather, wind, and other natural elements. NO perishable items. Only 2x4 pieces of lumber, which you must self-supply, are allowed to secure your scarecrow to the ground.

Downtown Scavenger Hunt
Think you know Middletown? Come join our search Saturday, October 15th for historic Middletown landmarks! Our first annual City of Middletown Scavenger Hunt will kick-off in Festival Square at 11:00am, where families, friends, businesses, teammates, or associates will pick up their team packets with assignments. Cost per team is $25 (Cash ONLY) and teams may consist of up to 5 members. All groups must pre-register by Friday, October 7th. Monetary prize and local gifts to be won. Proceeds will be donated to a local charity.

Harvest Festival & Trunk-Or-Treat
Saturday, October 22nd
 we will hold our Second Annual Harvest Festival in conjunction with the Middletown Farmer’s Market, Middletown Cares Coalition, and Middletown BID District from 11:00am to 1:00pm in the Erie Way parking lot. Live entertainment including arts & crafts, ‘Trunk or Treat’ with city vehicles & partners, face and pumpkin painting, petting zoo, vendors,  and a range of other children activities to round out the day. There is no rain date for this event.

Parent’s Night Out!
The Middletown Recreation Department, Middletown Cares Coalition, & City of Middletown BID District invite parent’s to enjoy a night downtown just to themselves on us! Pre-register children as young as 3 years old for a night of fun at the Recreation Center on Friday, October 28th beginning at 5:30pm to 10:00pm. Must pre-register by Wednesday, October 26th. Cost is $5 per child. Children will have free time in the gym, followed by pizza and a movie. Parents will receive a free voucher to see the Halloween Classic film of the evening at the Historic Paramount Theatre or they are invited to enjoy date night at one of the many downtown Middletown establishments beforehand. 
Babysitting will be staffed by the Recreation Department.

Women’s Self-Defense Seminar
Ladies, come join the Middletown Recreation Department for our first Women’s Self-Defense Seminar this November! No experience, strength or flexibility required! Starting with a discussion on awareness & prevention followed by instruction on self-defense techniques. 
FREE Childcare will be provided by the Middletown Recreation Department Staff for the duration of this event.

Second Annual Youth Turkey Trot
Stop by on Saturday, November 19th, the Middletown Recreation Department and the Middletown High School Varsity Track Program will be holding our Annual Youth Turkey Trot. Races will begin at 10:00am at the Middletown High School Track on Faller Field. This event is open to boys and girls from preschool through middle school. Winners in each category will take home a turkey!

City of Middletown Tree Lighting & Holiday Parade

Guess who’s coming to town Friday, November 25th to light the City of Middletown’s Christmas Tree? Bundle up & watch as the man in red parades his way through Downtown Middletown to lite our tree in Festival Square. Music begins in Festival Square at 6:00pm and the parade to begin shortly after. 

It’s A Wonderful Life
The City of Middletown will be showing ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ free of charge for both individuals & families on Friday, November 25th at 7:30pm, after the Festival Tree Lighting & Holiday Parade at the Historic Paramount Theatre.

Letter’s to the North Pole
Write a letter to Kris Kringle and deposit them in one of the five ‘Merry Mailboxes’ that can be found in the Downtown Middletown area. The mailboxes can be found starting Monday, November 21st in the lobby of City Hall, Festival Square, Thrall Library, the Paramount Theatre and in the Recreation & Parks Dept. Office on Academy Avenue. All letters will be ‘delivered’ to the North Pole and children will receive a personalized hand-written letter back. All mailboxes containing the letters will be collected by the Middletown Recreation Dept. on Monday, December 12th. No letters will be accepted after this time. Please be sure to have a self-addressed envelope with postage enclosed with your letter to ensure safe delivery back.

Jolly Jinglers 
Friday, December 9th
 we will be meeting at 6:00PM in Festival Square to spread some holiday cheer amongst shoppers, restaurant-goers, and Middletown citizens alike. Dress your best to sing signature carols through town with your family, friends, business, or otherwise. Be sure to dress appropriately.

Santa Paws!
Bring your pups downtown on Saturday, December 3rd from 11:00am to 1:00pm where they too can meet & have their picture taken with Santa! Bring your camera, phone or iPad to snap a pic of your furry friend sitting with the big man in red. Meet with local rescues & humane societies on how to help as the holiday approaches. Pet supply donations will also be collected for these groups.

Quick Stop Santa Spot
The Middletown Recreation Department, Middletown Cares Coalition & Middletown BID District present to you Quick Stop Santa Spot where you and your little ones can grab a photo opportunity with Santa. Meet us Saturday, December 10th and Saturday, December 17th from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Photos will not be for sale so make sure you have your personal camera to take a shot. Come by the park on North Street, across from King Street for this opportunity!

All Aboard the Polar Express!
The Middletown Recreation Department, the BID District of Middletown, and the Middletown Cares Coalition will be showing the Polar Express at the Historic Paramount Theatre on Monday, December 19th at pm. Doors open at 5:30pm where all children attending will receive their “ticket” to be punched upon entering the theatre. The cost of this event is $5.00 per ticket. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

Gingerbread-House Making
The Middletown Recreation Department has teamed up with Mulberry House Senior Center to host our first Gingerbread-House Making Contest. Cost is $5 per team of up to three persons. Teams can consist of both children and/or adults. Pre-registration is a must. Free hot chocolate for all participants.

Ice-Skating in Maple Hill & Fancher-Davidge Park

When weather and ice conditions permit, ice-skating on both the Maple Hill & Fancher-Davidge ponds will be allowed. “NO SKATING” signs will warn you not to skate when conditions are dangerous. All skating is at your own risk. Please watch for special events surrounding ice-skating in the parks.

Egg Hunt
An Easter Egg Hunt will be held in Fancher-Davidge 
Park on Saturday, April 15th.
 Start time is scheduled for 1:00pm. The first age groups will be 5 years old and younger and the second, 6 to 10 years old. Bring the children out and let them have fun hunting for Easter eggs. This event is free of charge.

Teen Programs

The Middletown Teen Program is for Middletown Residents ONLY! 

TEEN CENTER GYM PROGRAM


Septetmber through School Ending:
Monday through Thursdays: 6:00pm -9:00pm
Fridays & Saturdays: 8:00pm - 11:00pm

Summer gym hours for teens will be:
Tuesdays & Thursdays: 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Fridays & Saturdays: 8:00pm - 11:00pm

Activities will include basketball, indoor soccer, double dutch and more! All participants must have the proper paperwork filed with the Middletown Teen Center Staff before admittance to the Gym Program. All participants MUST follow ALL Rules & Regulations or the will be excluded from the program.

The Teen Center is free of charge for children 11 - 18 years of age. The Teen Center is a safe place for teens to socialize and be able to play pool, ping pong, video games, table games and exercise in our full size gym and the fitness room.

The ultimate goal and purpose of the Mayor's Youth Council is to propose and implement idea and activities, for the enrichment of Middletown's Youth and overall community.

In the Mayor's Youth Council we offer:

  • Job opportunities
  • Networking
